Federal Grants to Bring Extended Learning and Enrichment Opportunities to 19 DPS Schools

Students and families at 19 schools in Denver Public Schools (DPS) will soon benefit from new community learning centers, thanks to millions of dollars in grants through the federal 21st Century Community Learning Center Program. Last week, the Colorado Department of Education announced the award of the grants that will benefit 60 Colorado schools, 19 of which are in DPS. The grants were awarded to school districts and community partners. In DPS, dozens of partners have teamed up with schools across the district to secure and implement the grants, including Metropolitan State College of Denver, Mi Casa Resource Center and Summer Scholars.

Colorado online public school students stay busy outside the “classroom”

 

The results of a new survey conducted by the Colorado Coalition of Cyberschool Families (CCCF) demonstrate that Colorado’s online students are active, engaged in their communities and find unique ways to fulfill their own interests away from a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Of students who participated in the survey about how they spend their time, 88 percent of these children who are enrolled in full-time virtual public schools spend at least one hour each day engaged in an extra-curricular activity outside the home. What’s more, 99 percent of the students who completed the survey socialize with peers at least one hour each day.
