Denver Ranks #11 on EPA's list of cities with most Energy Star Buildings

Today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the annual list of U.S. metropolitan areas with the most Energy Star certified buildings for 2011. The list of 25 cities is headed by Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Houston, Dallas, Riverside, Calif. and Boston. By the end of 2011, the nearly 16,500 Energy Star certified buildings across America have helped save nearly $2.3 billion in annual utility bills and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equal to emissions from the annual energy use of more than 1.5 million homes.

WHAT:          Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield will conduct a controlled burn during the week of March 19 through 28, 2012.

Udall presses Energy Secretary on urgency of extending tax credits for wind and other renewables

On Thursday, during a hearing about the president's proposed budget in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Mark Udall questioned Energy Secretary Steven Chu about the importance of extending the expiring tax credits for wind energy production and other renewable energy sources.  Thousands of Coloradans work in the wind energy industry, but the industry could be seriously affected if the tax credits expire at the end of the year as scheduled.

On this Valentine’s Day, Mayor Michael B. Hancock and Denver Public Works’ Denver Recycles announce the winners of the “I Heart My Purple Recycling Cart” photo contest and thank all who entered the challenge. Denver residents were encouraged to submit creative photos showing their support for, and love of, recycling.

Lakewood city council meets to discuss possible changes to Smoke-Free Law

On February 6, 2012, the Lakewood City Council met to consider changes to the city’s smoke-free law. This study session followed more than 30 months of work by groups including the Mayor’s Ad Hoc Committee, advocates for statewide public health, members of a community smoke-free coalition and the Jefferson County Public Health Tobacco Prevention Initiative.  These groups provided the Council with the latest scientific evidence on the dangers of secondhand smoke and citizen surveys showing that 81% of Lakewood’s community supports laws which make more public places smoke free.  They also presented studies showing that stronger smoke-free laws have either a neutral or positive economic impact on communities.
